#3 Zagreb – the toy seller

Man selling wooden toys on Dolac, Zagreb’s main market, June 2009

Dolac occupies a large terrace behind the main square, Trg bana Jelačića, and is arranged on two levels. The upper (open) one has stalls selling fruit and vegetables, and towards the back a few other things (including these wooden toys); the fish market (ribarnica) leads off the back of this terrace. The lower (covered) area is itself divided into two separate rooms, one selling fresh and cured meats, the other cheese and dairy produce. Dolac was originally the site of a medieval settlement of the same name, which was cleared to make way for the market in the 1920s – before that, the market was held in the square below (and, going back several centuries, on St Mark’s Square in Gornji grad, the upper part of town).

    • Thanks Alessandro for always taking the time to comment – I really appreciate it. And yes, background info = all part of the ‘story’.
