Held on the last Sunday before Lent (usually February), the Rijeka Carnival is now the second largest carnival in Europe after Venice. Events are spread over several days, culminating in the International Carnival Parade – an enormous procession with well over 10,000 participants, which sees a succession of floats and cavorting Croatians in outrageous costumes make their way through the streets of Rijeka.
