#16 Pag – Velika Gospa
Procession on Assumption Day (Velika Gospa). Pag, August 2012
Assumption Day, celebrated on the 15th of August, is one of the most important feast days in the religious calendar, in Croatia as elsewhere. During the evening in the town of Pag, following an all night vigil the previous night, a statue of the Virgin Mary (Gospe od Staroga Grada) is carried from a shrine in the old town to the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary in the town centre. The procession includes members of the clergy, local firemen, men and women in traditional local folk costume (note the headdresses on the two women in the centre of the image – Pag is famous for its lace) and pilgrims and faithful from all over Croatia.
